Brief

The Uranium Mines and Mills Regulations were approved by Her Excellency the Governor General in Council on May 31, 2000. The Regulations apply to uranium mines and mills and regulate various aspects of their operation.

A key requirement for a licence is that it must contain specific information regarding the plan and description of the mine or mill, including details about the site evaluation process, investigations, surface plans, structures, excavations, underground development, geology, mineralogy, activities with potential impacts, design of eating areas, decommissioning plans, emergency power systems, waste management system, health and safety policies, radiation protection workers, training programs, ventilation and dust control methods, and security measures.

Additionally, a licence application must contain a proposed code of practice that includes action levels for specific parameters, reporting procedures in case of an action level being reached, and the results of any commissioning work or process-hazard analysis.
