Brief
The Alternative Motor Fuels Act of 1988 aims to promote the use of alternative fuels such as methanol and ethanol in transportation by encouraging their development and widespread use. The law amends the Motor Vehicle Information and Cost Savings Act to provide for the treatment of these alternative fuels, which are found to be more environmentally friendly than traditional gasoline and diesel fuel. The Secretary of Energy is required to ensure that the maximum number of federal vehicles acquired annually are alcohol-powered or dual-energy vehicles, among others. A study on electric vehicles is also mandated to determine whether regulations should be amended or additional ones promulgated to stimulate their production and introduction into commerce.
