Brief

The Federal Oil and Gas Royalty Management Act of 1982 ensures proper accounting for oil and gas originated on public lands and the Outer Continental Shelf under the direction of the Secretary of the Interior. The Act clarifies, reaffirms, expands, and defines responsibilities and obligations of lessees, operators, and other persons involved in transportation or sale of oil and gas from Federal and Indian lands and the Outer Continental Shelf. It also requires the development of enforcement practices to ensure prompt and proper collection and disbursement of oil and gas revenues owed to the United States and Indian lessors. The Act provides for hearings, investigations, inspections, civil penalties, and criminal penalties for noncompliance with its provisions.
