Brief

The Old Age Assistance Claims Settlement Act was enacted on October 19, 1984, to compensate heirs of deceased Indians for improper payments from trust estates to States or political subdivisions. The Act authorizes the Secretary of the Interior to determine and pay claims, including interest, to individuals who are entitled to a portion of unauthorized disbursements made from their trust estate. The Act also provides for the identification and payment of individuals without requiring them to file a formal claim.
