Brief

This document provides a summary of the Telecommunications (Numbering Charges) Act 1997. Part 1 of the Act introduces the legislation, defines key terms, and outlines the commencement and extension of the Act to eligible Territories. The Part also defines the interpretation of certain expressions used in the Act.

Further, Part 3 of the Act addresses the imposition of charges on allocated numbers. Specifically, Section 18 requires carriage service providers to hold allocated numbers on a designated day, as determined by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA). The ACMA must publish this determination in the Gazette before the designated day. The amount of charge imposed on a number is determined by a written determination made by the ACMA, which is a legislative instrument.
