Brief

The Ombudsman Act 1976 establishes the Office of the Commonwealth Ombudsman, enabling the investigation of complaints from individuals or groups regarding the actions of the Commonwealth or its instrumentalities. Part I - Preliminary outlines the Act's title, commencement, interpretation, and application, as well as the establishment of the office and its powers. The Act also establishes the offices of the Defence Force Ombudsman, Postal Industry Ombudsman, Overseas Students Ombudsman, and Private Health Insurance Ombudsman. Division B outlines the procedures for handling complaints, including investigation, reporting, referral, and provision of information and documents.
