Brief

'The International Financial Institutions (Share Increase) Act 1986' is an Act that relates to the purchase of additional shares of the capital stock of the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the International Finance Corporation. The Act enables the Treasurer to make agreements with these institutions for the purchase by Australia of additional shares at a specified price.

The Act has two main sections: one dealing with agreements for the purchase of additional shares of the capital stock of the Bank, and another dealing with agreements for the purchase of additional shares of the capital stock of the Corporation. The Treasury is empowered to make these agreements on behalf of Australia, and the necessary moneys are paid out of the Consolidated Revenue Fund.

The Act also provides for the issuance of securities as part of the agreement, and certain terms and conditions may be included in the agreement subject to this Act. Section 7 of the International Monetary Agreements Act 1947 applies to payments made under these agreements.

This compilation includes amendments made up to July 2024, including a provision that amends section 3 of the Act under No. 67, 2024. The legislation history and amendment history are provided in the endnotes for further information.
