Brief

The Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Levy Act 2017 is an Act that imposes a levy on permit applications under the Hazardous Waste (Regulation of Exports and Imports) Act 1989. The Act extends to external Territories and binds the Crown in right of each of the States, Australian Capital Territory, and Northern Territory.

The Act defines certain terms including hazardous waste permit application, indexation day, index number, March quarter, and property of a State. It also states that the Act does not impose a tax on property of a State.

The levy imposed under the Act is payable by the applicant and has an amount of $4,616 or another amount not exceeding $6,000 prescribed by regulations. The amount of the levy can be adjusted based on an indexation factor calculated using a formula involving index numbers published by the Australian Statistician.
