Brief

The Federal Financial Relations Act 2009 is an Australian law that provides for the financial assistance to be provided by the Commonwealth and the States in relation to certain matters. The Act has several key components, including general revenue assistance and national partnership payments.

Under this Act, each State is entitled to receive a payment of GST revenue grants for a payment year, which is worked out using a formula that takes into account the adjusted state population and the GST revenue sharing relativity for the state. Additionally, there are other forms of general revenue assistance available, including general purpose financial assistance.

The Act also provides for national specific purpose payments, which are made to States in relation to certain service delivery sectors such as skills and workforce development, disability services, and housing, homelessness, and housing affordability matters. These payments are subject to certain conditions and are intended to support the delivery of these services by the States.

The Federal Financial Relations Act 2009 has undergone amendments since its initial enactment, with the latest amendment being Act No. 54, 2024. The most recent compilation date is 6 July 2024, indicating that the law has been updated to reflect changes made up to that point.
