The Building a Green Prairie Economy Act, enacted in 2022, aims to promote economic sustainability and growth in the Prairie provinces through a framework that coordinates local cooperation and engagement. The framework must be developed by the Minister in collaboration with other federal ministers, provincial government representatives, municipalities, Indigenous governing bodies, the private sector, and civil society organizations. It must include measures such as addressing transportation options in small cities and communities, fostering job creation and skills transfer, prioritizing projects that generate natural infrastructure and a clean environment, supporting the development of clean energy, and preparing infrastructure projects to facilitate adaptation to climate change. The Minister must prepare two reports: one within 12 months after the Act comes into force, setting out the framework, and another within two years and every five years thereafter, on the progress and effectiveness of the framework.
