'The Alternative Fuels Act is a Canadian statute that aims to accelerate the use of alternative fuels for motor vehicles. The Act was enacted in 1995 and requires federal bodies and Crown corporations to progressively replace their motor vehicles with ones operating on alternative fuels, thereby promoting the replacement of petroleum-based fuels for transportation. The Act sets out specific targets for the percentage of motor vehicles operated by these entities that must be powered by engines capable of operating on alternative fuels, starting from 50% in 1997 and increasing to 75% in 1999 and thereafter. The Treasury Board is responsible for making regulations to carry out the purpose or provisions of the Act, including prescribing criteria for determining cost effectiveness and operational feasibility. Overall, the Alternative Fuels Act represents a federal commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and other air pollutants associated with internal combustion engines.'
