The Air Carrier Access Act of 1986 was enacted on October 2, 1986, to provide non-discriminatory treatment for handicapped individuals in air transportation. The law prohibits air carriers from discriminating against qualified handicapped individuals by reason of their handicap. The Secretary of Transportation was required to promulgate regulations within 120 days to ensure safe and non-discriminatory carriage of all passengers on air carriers. This act aimed to provide equal access to air travel for people with disabilities.
