Brief

'The Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order (Amendment) Bill, 2019 aims to amend the Constitution (Scheduled Tribes) Order, 1950 to include certain communities in the list of Scheduled Tribes in relation to the State of Assam. The proposed amendment seeks to grant Scheduled Tribes status to 41 communities, including Koch Rajbongshi, Tai Ahom, Chutiya, and others, which were previously not recognized as Scheduled Tribes in the State of Assam. The Bill is based on the recommendation of the State of Assam and does not entail any additional recurring expenditure from the Consolidated Fund of India. The amendment will facilitate the provision of benefits to the persons belonging to these communities under existing schemes meant for the welfare of Scheduled Tribes, without incurring any additional cost.'
