Summary:

The Environment Agency has scrapped the u00a3250,000 cap on Variable Monetary Penalties (VMPs) and expanded the range of offences that can be punished with a VMP. This allows the Agency to hold polluters, including the water industry, accountable for environmental damage. The penalties will be proportionate to the size of the company and the nature of the offence, and will be used to fund a new Water Restoration Fund.
