The South African Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment has welcomed the landmark decision to adopt a Global Goal on Adaptation, recognizing different theme areas for adaptation action, measurable targets, and the importance of securing adequate public finance for adaptation from developed countries. The country has also emphasized the need for climate ambition to be balanced across mitigation, adaptation, and means of implementation, with equity and common but differentiated responsibilities underpinning all asks on developing countries. The decisions also include the operationalization of the Loss and Damage Fund, Just Transition Pathways, and the Global Goal on Adaptation, as well as recognition of the right to pursue climate resilience in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication.
