SIU to probe affairs of Moqhaka Local Municipality

Summary

On April 12, 2024, President Cyril Ramaphosa authorized the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of serious maladministration at the Moqhaka Local Municipality in the Free State, South Africa. The investigation focuses on alleged irregularities in procuring and contracting armed physical security services, as well as unauthorized, irregular, fruitless, or wasteful expenditure between January 2019 and present. The SIU aims to identify system failures and make recommendations to prevent future losses, and will refer evidence of criminal conduct to the National Prosecuting Authority.
