SIU to investigate Home Affairs and PRASA

Summary:

The South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorized the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of serious maladministration in the Department of Home Affairs and the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). The SIU will probe issues related to the issuance of permanent residence permits, corporate visas, and citizenship by naturalization, as well as alleged improper conduct by officials and employees. In regards to PRASA, the SIU will investigate allegations of corruption related to the awarding of tenders for the supply of trains and fraudulent liability claims processed by the Group Insurance Department. The SIU aims to recover any financial losses suffered by the State and refer any evidence of criminal conduct to the National Prosecuting Authority for further action.
