SIU authorised to investigate the Tokologo Local Municipality and the Sol Plaatjie Local Municipality for the procurement of street lights and an electrification project

Summary:

The Special Investigating Unit (SIU) has been authorized to investigate the Tokologo Local Municipality and the Sol Plaatjie Local Municipality in the Free State and Northern Cape provinces, respectively, for alleged serious maladministration and financial losses. The investigation will focus on the procurement of a street lights project and an electrification project, as well as any unauthorised, irregular, fruitless, or wasteful expenditure incurred by the departments or state. The SIU will also investigate whether there was any unlawful or improper conduct by department officials, suppliers, or other entities that may have caused harm to the public. The investigation's scope covers alleged misconduct between April 2015 and April 2024. The SIU will identify system failures and make recommendations to prevent future losses and will refer any evidence of criminal conduct to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for further action.
