SIU authorised to investigate Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works

Summary:

The President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, has authorized the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) to investigate allegations of maladministration and corruption in the affairs of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality, specifically relating to the procurement and/or contracting of construction upgrades and refurbishment at Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works. The investigation will cover a period between 2018 and 2023, and aims to recover financial losses suffered by the State, as well as identify system failures and make recommendations to prevent future losses. The SIU will refer evidence of criminal conduct to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and may institute civil action in the High Court or Special Tribunal to correct wrongdoing caused by corruption, fraud, or maladministration.
