Summary:
The IX Meeting of the Parties (MoP) of the Pelagos Agreement took place in Nice, France, on January 25-26. The meeting was attended by delegations from Italy, France, and Monaco, with the Italian Ministry of the Environment and Energy Security (MASE) represented by the General Directorate for Natural Heritage and the Sea. The Pelagos Agreement aims to promote coordinated and harmonized actions among the three signatory countries to protect cetaceans and their habitats from human impacts and to support scientific research and awareness campaigns. The meeting resulted in the adoption of eight resolutions, including new internal regulations, technical-scientific recommendations, and a new partnership agreement, as well as the approval of a provisional budget for 2024-2025 and a two-year work program. Italy plays a key role in the implementation of the agreement, particularly in the theme of combating pollution, and has committed to contribute u20ac105,000 to support the activities. A resolution was also approved, authorizing the Permanent Secretariat of the Agreement to sign an agreement with the RAMOGE Secretariat, a intergovernmental agreement between France, Italy, and Monaco to conserve the marine environment.
