"On December 10, 2024, the Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) approved the first stage of decommissioning Australia's original nuclear research reactor, the High Flux Australian Reactor (HIFAR). The license application was submitted by ANSTO in 2023, following thorough review and public consultation. ARPANSA determined that ANSTO can safely commence limited decommissioning activities."
