EDPS Newsletter (107): Commencing 2024 on a High

The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) launched its 20th anniversary celebrations, with numerous initiatives and actions to shape the future of privacy. Meanwhile, January marked Data Protection Day, focusing on data protection issues and approaches to protect individuals. The EDPS also continued its regular supervisory activities.

Key Highlights:

1. 20th Anniversary Celebrations: The EDPS is celebrating 20 years of protecting personal data by modernizing and updating its approach to uphold the highest standards in privacy.
2. Data Protection Day: The EDPS published an opinion on a proposed Regulation to extend the temporary derogation from certain provisions of the ePrivacy Directive to combat child sexual abuse online.
3. Computers, Privacy and Data Protection Conference: The EDPS, in collaboration with the Privacy Salon and colleagues, organized a one-day conference on the regulation of global data flows, the impact of data protection and privacy on human rights, and the international regulation of artificial intelligence.
4. EDPS Assessments: The EDPS published its opinion on a Regulation to enhance police cooperation to prevent, detect, and investigate the smuggling of migrants and the trafficking of human beings.
5. Data Protection Officer Interview: The EDPS' data protection officer shared their experiences and insights on the role of data protection officers in the EU institutions, bodies, offices, and agencies.
6. Child Online Behavior: The EDPS participated in a panel discussion on the risks and consequences of children spending an average of 167 minutes online per day, and explored measures to ensure children's online safety and privacy.
7. Personal Data Transmission: The EDPS advised an EU institution on sending personal data to EU Member States' intelligence authorities, recommending that it ask for specific justifications and assess the reasons brought forward.

Future Plans:

1. European Data Protection Summit: The EDPS is organizing a summit on June 20, 2024, in Brussels, Belgium, to discuss the role of privacy and data protection in modern democracies.
2. EDPS Initiatives: The EDPS will continue to unveil its 20 initiatives to improve its work and lead as a modern data protection authority throughout 2024.
