On June 15, 2023, a breakthrough in pest identification was successfully tested and tried in Sydney. The adoption of "MALDI-TOF" and "MinION" diagnostic systems has revolutionized Australia's border biosecurity operations by using protein and DNA profiles for rapid species identification through automated data matching. Historically, unknown pests took up to a week to identify, but with these new tools, identification can be concluded in under seven hours.
