On December 5, 2024, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued an update regarding "In five cancer types, prevention and screening have been major contributors to saving lives". A modeling study found that from 1975 to 2020, prevention and screening efforts averted 4.75 million deaths from breast, cervical, colorectal, lung, and prostate cancers, accounting for 80% of the total 5.94 million deaths averted during this period.
