On August 29, 2023, the Brazilian Ministry of Human Rights and Citizenship reported that the Justice of Labor condemned Volkswagen do Brasil to pay R$165 million in moral damages for exploiting slave labor on Fazenda Vale do Rio Cristalino from 1964-1985. The judgment was the largest condemnation in Brazilian history regarding contemporary slave labor.
