“Guardians” to monitor ecosystems affected by illegal gold mining

On February 28, 2024, the WWF Guyane launched a project to combat illegal gold mining in the Haut-Maroni region. The "Gardiens du Haut-Maroni" initiative aimed to create a network of local people to monitor their territory and collect data on biodiversity loss due to illegal mining. Four residents from the Wayana community were trained to use monitoring tools, with support from the OFB, Office de l'eau de Guyane, and WWF.
