Summary
The eighth volume of the Paolo Baffi Library’s Collezioni e studi series has been published, focusing on the language of economics in Italy. This comprehensive work presents an overall picture of the language of economics, drawing on a wide selection of contributions and studies. The review aims to achieve two objectives: (1) to outline the general and common aspects of the language of economics, exploring its various forms, with a historical perspective and in comparison with other special languages; and (2) to provide food for thought on the evolution and communicative capacity of this language, using the annual reports and concluding remarks of the Governor as a case study.
The volume’s interdisciplinary approach brings together contributions from linguistics, economics, and communication studies, offering a nuanced understanding of the language of economics in Italy. The scope of the project is ambitious, examining the language’s development, structure, and function, as well as its relationship with other languages and economic institutions. By analyzing the annual reports and concluding remarks of the Governor, the work sheds light on the communicative strategies employed by economic policymakers and the expectations surrounding their language use.
Throughout the volume, the authors engage with a range of theoretical and methodological tools, including discourse analysis, corpus linguistics, and pragmatic theory. Their findings have important implications for our understanding of the language of economics, its role in shaping economic policy and decision-making, and its potential for informing more effective communication strategies in the economic field.
Overall, this volume provides a valuable contribution to the field of linguistic studies, offering a unique perspective on the language of economics in Italy and its implications for economic communication. As such, it is likely to be of interest to scholars and researchers across disciplines, including economists, linguists, communication studies experts, and policy analysts.
