Summary:
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has proposed updating air pollution standards for large facilities that burn municipal solid waste. The proposed rules would reduce emissions of nine pollutants, including sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and particulate matter, by approximately 14,000 tons per year, improving air quality for nearby communities. The proposal aims to advance environmental justice by reducing pollution in overburdened communities, which disproportionately affect low-income and minority populations. The EPA estimates that the net present value of health benefits from the proposed rule will be up to $14 billion over 20 years, and considers this action to be likely to advance environmental justice. The public has 60 days to comment on the proposal, and an informational webinar will be held to discuss the details.
