China has announced that the capacity to generate electricity from wind energy and solar energy in its territory exceeds its capacity to generate electricity from thermal energy for the first time.

"On April 29, 2025, the Ministry of Trade issued an update regarding China's significant shift in energy production. For the first time, wind and solar energy surpassed thermal energy capacity in the country's electricity generation during the first quarter of this year. This achievement marks a substantial milestone towards China's goal to establish itself as a global leader in renewable energy."
