Brief

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued an order against Shankar IAS Academy for making misleading claims regarding the results of the UPSC Civil Service Exam 2022. The CCPA imposed a penalty of ₹ 5 lakh on the academy for its advertisements, which claimed that 336 candidates were selected from a total of 933 at the all-India level. However, the academy could only provide details of 333 successful candidates and concealed information about the courses opted by them. This has been deemed as a violation of consumer rights to be informed and protect themselves against unfair trade practices. The CCPA found that the academy's advertisement was targeted towards UPSC aspirants, making it essential for such advertisements to contain truthful and honest representation of facts.
