BfDI welcomes EDSA guidelines on legitimate interest

On "12/2024", the Federal Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information, Prof. Dr. Louisa Specht-Riemenschneider, welcomed the new guidelines from the European Data Protection Board (EDSA) on legitimate interest. The EDSA guidelines provide clarity on the conditions that must be met by those processing personal data under legitimate interest, aiming to promote both individual rights and business interests. The guidelines emphasize that legitimate interest should not be seen as a "last resort" for processing activities not covered by other legal grounds, nor should it be excessively broadened.
