Brief

On "12/11/2024", the "Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA)" issued an update regarding "AIFA published the 2023 OsMed Report “The use of medicines in Italy”. The report highlights that although there has been improvement in appropriateness, adherence to therapy, and generic drug usage, there are still significant regional differences in medication consumption that cannot be explained by epidemiological factors. Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA) reported that the total expenditure on medicines was 36.2 billion euros in 2023, with 68.7% reimbursed by the National Health Service (SSN). The report also noted a significant increase in the purchase of generic drugs and a decrease in the cost difference between branded and generic drugs. AIFA's 2023 OsMed Report revealed that there was an increase in antibiotic consumption despite campaigns to promote responsible use, driven by higher prices and targeted prescriptions. The report also showed that the top categories for drug purchases were cardiovascular medications, followed by gastrointestinal and metabolic medications, and then blood and organ empoietic drugs.
