A record 299,419 returns filed in the first week of the new tax year

On 6 April 2025, a record 299,419 taxpayers filed their Self Assessment returns in the first week of the new tax year. HMRC encouraged people to file early, allowing them to plan and make payments in advance, reducing stress and avoiding penalties. Early filers can also claim refunds as soon as the return is processed, and set up budget payment plans to spread the cost of their tax bill over time.
