Summary:

The National Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Report (NECER) 2022/23, released on 12 December 2023, highlights the successes and challenges faced by the Environmental Management Inspectorate (Green Scorpions) in addressing environmental crimes in South Africa. Despite a 52% increase in complaints reported in the 2022/23 financial year, the Green Scorpions achieved 55% more successful convictions and saw more fitting sentences for environmental crimes. However, there was a 7% decrease in criminal dockets registered and a 6% decrease in dockets handed over to the National Prosecuting Authority. The report also indicates a decrease in the number of Environmental Management Inspectors (EMIs) nationally, but an increase in proactive inspections and a total of 4330 facilities inspected.
