INPI recognizes first GI of 2024: chamomile from Mandirituba (PR)

The National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) has recognized the Geographic Indication (IG) for the desiccated chamomile produced in Mandirituba, Paranu00e1, Brazil. This is the first IG registered in 2024, bringing the total number of recognized IGs to 120. The production of chamomile in Mandirituba has a significant history, with over 50 producers transforming the city into the largest chamomile producer in Brazil by 1998. The region's climate, soil, and agricultural knowledge combine to produce high-quality chamomile with an essential oil concentration of around 0.7%, surpassing the industry standard of 0.4%. The chamomile production also boosts tourism and the local economy, earning Mandirituba the nickname "Capital Paranaense da Camomila"" (Paranaense Capital of Chamomile).
