Summary:

The Environment Agency has scrapped the u00a3250,000 cap on Variable Monetary Penalties (VMPs) and expanded the range of offences that can be punished with a VMP. This allows the Agency to hold polluters, including the water industry, accountable for environmental damage. The new unlimited penalties will apply to companies that breach environmental permits, commit illegal discharges, and commit waste offences. The penalties will be proportionate to the size of the company and the nature of the offence, and will be used to fund a new Water Restoration Fund. The goal is to provide stronger protection to the environment, communities, and nature.

Companies who pollute the environment can be hit with unlimited financial penalties from the Environment Agency from today (11 December 2023). The previous £250,000 cap on Variable Monetary Penalties (VMPs) has now been scrapped and the range of offences they cover has been expanded, meaning the Environment Agency has more tools with which to hold
