Brief

Summary:

The European Central Bank (ECB) has published a study on the environmental impact of euro banknotes used as a payment instrument. The study found that the average environmental impact of payments made with euro banknotes in 2019 is 101 micropoints (u00ceu00bcPt) per capita in the euro area, equivalent to 8 km travelled by car, representing 0.01% of the total environmental impact of an average European's annual consumption. The study measures the potential environmental impact of all activities along the complete lifecycle of euro banknotes, from raw material sourcing to production, distribution, circulation, and final disposal by national central banks (BCNs) in the euro area. The European System is committed to reducing the environmental impact of banknotes while ensuring their widespread availability and acceptance.

Summary:

The European Central Bank (ECB) has released a study on the environmental footprint of euro banknotes used as a payment method. The study examines the ecological impact of banknotes throughout their lifecycle, from raw material sourcing to production, distribution, circulation, and disposal by national central banks (NCBs) within the euro area. The findings indicate that the average environmental impact of banknote payments in 2019 stood at 101 micropoint (u03bcPt) per citizen in the euro area, equivalent to 8 kilometers of travel by car, or approximately 0.01% of the total environmental impact of a European citizen’s annual consumption activities.

The study employs the European Commission’s product environmental footprint method to evaluate the full lifecycle of euro banknotes. This builds upon previous research initiated in 2004, which aimed to assess the environmental impact of the first series of euro banknotes. The ECB is committed to further reducing the environmental footprint of banknotes while ensuring their widespread availability and acceptance.

Key Takeaways:

1. The average environmental impact of banknote payments in 2019 was 101 micropoint (u03bcPt) per citizen in the euro area.
2. This translates to 8 kilometers of travel by car, or approximately 0.01% of the total environmental impact of a European citizen’s annual consumption activities.
3. The study examines the environmental impact of euro banknotes throughout their lifecycle, from raw material sourcing to production, distribution, circulation, and disposal.
4. The ECB is committed to further reducing the environmental footprint of banknotes while ensuring their widespread availability and acceptance.

Recommendations:

Based on the study’s findings, the ECB recommends exploring opportunities to minimize the environmental impact of euro banknotes, while maintaining their widespread use and acceptance.
