Summary:

A joint task force composed of Auditors-Fiscal do Ministu00e9rio do Trabalho e Emprego, Procuradores do Trabalho, and Agents of the Policia Federal rescued seven individuals who were subjected to forced labor similar to slavery in a religious institution in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. The investigation revealed that the pastor responsible for the location was maintaining a support house with the name of the church and was providing workers to local establishments, receiving and managing the received values with rules set by him that allowed the loss of values by dependents. The operation was conducted as part of Operation Rescue III and concluded this month.

Summary:

On [Date], a joint task force consisting of Auditors from the Ministry of Labor and Employment, Prosecutors of Labor, and Agents from the Federal Police rescued seven people who were subjected to forced labor similar to slavery in a religious institution in the Western part of Rio de Janeiro. According to the investigation, the responsible pastor of the institution maintained a support center for the dependent individuals and provided them as laborers to local businesses, receiving and managing the payments while setting rules that allowed for the loss of their earnings.

The fiscal investigation, conducted as part of Operation Rescue III, revealed that the dependent individuals, who were chemically dependent, were kept in a support center linked to a church and forced to work in commercial establishments for a daily wage of R$ 50. The majority of the earnings were retained by the pastor, with the workers being required to pay a 10% tithe on their earnings, which they could only use to buy market items every 15 days. The balance was retained by the pastor until the end of their supposed treatment.

Following the inspections, the auditors from the Ministry of Labor issued several infractions, including the charge of forced labor similar to slavery. The Federal Police opened an investigation to investigate the criminal offenses, and the Public Ministry of Labor approved a Term of Conduct Adjustment (TAC). Additionally, each of the rescued individuals was issued a special unemployment benefits guide.

Operation Rescue III is the largest joint action in the country to combat forced labor and human trafficking, involving the Secretariat of Labor Inspection (SIT) of the Ministry of Labor and Employment, the Public Ministry of Labor (MPT), the Federal Public Ministry (MPF), the Union Public Defender (DPU), the Federal Police (PF), and the Federal Highway Police (PRF).
