Brief

The Joint Consolidation Loan Separation Act (Public Law 117–200) allows married couples and previously married couples to separate joint consolidation loans into two individual Federal Direct Consolidation Loans. The law authorizes borrowers in default on a joint consolidation loan to receive a separate Federal Direct Consolidation Loan.
